I joined Dacorum Chinese School in 2009 when I retired. Before then I had studied evening classes in Mandarin for a couple of years in London where I worked. I've been interested in Chinese language and culture ever since I started visiting China for my work and learning Mandarin and Chinese characters is now my hobby.

The classes at DCSA provide a good structure and discipline for anyone who wants to learn Mandarin and the small classes and native speaker teachers give quality learning even in classes where, inevitably, there is a wide range of knowledge and background in Chinese.

One important point is that the classes are always fun as well as serious, with lots of laughter as well as lots of learning.

I have two children learning Chinese at the Dacorum chinese School. While they are in their lessons, I also study in the adult class. At home we speak English, Cantonese and Hakka but I felt that learning Mandarin would be more useful and easier for the children in the long run. As well as learning the language, the children also gain cultural and social experience by mixing with other Chinese children and native Chinese-speaking teachers. Our adult class is well taught by Mrs Xiao (who also heads the school) and the class is well structured and fun.
