St Albans Christmas Lights Switch-On 2012

On Sunday 18th November, St Albans Christmas Lights Switch-On was held in St Peter's Street. It was themed around Aladdin and DCSA was invited to perform a Christmas themed cultural performance on the stage.

A choir organised by 李美群 and made up of children, adult students and parents of DCSA sang Christmas songs and traditional Chinese clebratory songs, all in Mandarin Chinese.

You can see the performance in a video here (thanks to Debbie Doherty) as well as extracts of the performance on video on the School YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/dcsaschool. There are also some photos here and the press report here.

Congratulations to children, parents and organisers for a very enjoyable performance and a wonderful showcase for DCSA.

春节 Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year fell on 23rd January 2012 and was the start of the Year of the Dragon.

To mark the occassion the School held a celebration for pupils and their families and friends on 28th January - for some photos click here

The occassion was a great event and fun for performers and their supporters alike.

Staring at 2:00PM, the School Principal, 肖校长,welcomed the audience who had come to support students whether children, wives, husbands or parents. Three students then took on the role of hosts to introduce the performances and students representing every class in the school made individual and group presentations of their Mandarin and Chinese Cultural skills.

There were 31 separate items ranging from a short song, 我们一起唱歌, performed by the year 1 class to a performance of 渔舟唱晚 by 黄琦 on the 古筝 a classical chinese instruement. The performance ended with Adult Class 2 leading the audience in singing 恭喜恭喜 accompanied by 杨老师.

To close this session, 肖校长 thanked the performers and their supporters, reviewed the School's achievements over the last year noting the national and Chinese Government awards the School's teachers had won. The teachers then came to the stage where they were introduced and presented with bouquets of flowers by their grateful students.

The audience and performers then moved to the social part of the event where they chatted together while sampling the delicious dishes which had been provided by a large number of the School's students and supporters. As well as the opportunity to meet fellow parents and students, there was the opportunity to try one's luck on the Tombola and to purchase Chinese souvenirs.

Everyone had a great time seeing the performances and meeting other supporters of Chinese Language and Culture.

The School would like to express its warm thanks to the students who worked so hard to make their performances a success, their teachers who coached and encouraged them so enthusiasticly and students and supporters who contributed so generously in setting up the venue, providing the delicious dishes, providing prizes for the Tombola, clearing up at the end and generally making the event the success it

undoubtedly was. Particular thanks to 李美群 and Lily Cayless for running the Tombola so that there were no disatisfied punters.

The Tombola raised £103.51, and the souvenirs £71.50 for School funds.

DCSA wishes everyone 恭喜发财
